Element of Design: LINE
Advantages/Disadvantages of line: Line can be used to attract your eye in a general direction which can place an emphasis on part of a fabric or a distraction from another part. For example when I was 10 we moved into my grandparents old house. My grandparents had always had a plain one color carpet in their living room. We replaced it with hardwood. The long boards as well as the long lines in each board made the room appear much larger than I remember it being when my grandparents lived there. I imagine if we had laid the boards in the opposite direction that it would have made the room appear shorter. Lines in clothing can also draw attention to a particular body part one may want to emphasize or de-emphasize. Basically you can shrink or stretch a space (whether it be a room, a body, or some other space) using the use of line and this can be an advantage or a disadvantage depending on the goal and perspective of the client.
Element of Design: PATTERN
Advantages and disadvantages of pattern: Patterns can be used to hide stains and spills (I find stains show up more on plain colors and get lost inside patterns, I wear a lot of patterns when breastfeeding for this reason) Patterns can also bring memories or feelings to an individual based on the connections they may have to the images. It can also be easy to match other colors in your closet to a patterned piece if the pattern involves multiple colors. Similarly patterns can be hard to match with other patterned pieces in ones wardrobe so sometimes too many patterned pieces can be overwhelming to the eye.
Element of Design: TEXTURE
Advantages and Disadvantages of texture:Texture can play a big role in temperature control as well as comfort. However, it can also cause discomfort due to things like itchiness and it can create concerns in washing routines. Some concerns I think of when I buy certain textures include the length of time it might take to dry or the itchiness it might cause.
I found the following sources helpful when learning about elements of design:
https://creativemarket.com/blog/10-basic-elements-of-design
https://99designs.ca/blog/tips/elements-of-design/
Design a class activity for one of the textile courses in NS that incorporates information on elements of design
Students in Textile Technology 12 could design a fashion line incorporating elements of design and explaining how their pieces include elements of design. For those with a talent and passion for drawing they could draw their own clothing pieces. Others who don’t feel comfortable with the drawing part of it could use a computer program to help them create their image. One great website I found is https://www.frilly.com/ Unfortunately this is only focused on women but the idea is fabulous. You get to choose your piece, shape, fabric, color, etc. They could even then create one of their pieces. This would combine the outcomes of production and understanding the elements of design and properties of fabrics.
I commented on 3 blogs. I have provided links to show you my comments below:

Comments are closed on this particular blog post but I wanted to make the comment that I love that she used the neckline as part of the understanding of the use of line in textiles. I have only been thinking about the lines used in the pattern/stitching/material of the piece and hadn’t thought of the outside line of a piece such as neckline. I’m glad I read this before doing my own assignment as I will now consider necklines when looking at line as well.
